Abstract
- Limit state formulations for the ultimate strength of rigid risers and pipelines are reviewed. Existing formulations are compared by assessing strengths for the parameter ranges representative of deepwater conditions. Both stress and strain approaches for longitudinal bending are considered and the correlation between them performed through a stress-strain material law. The correlation studies assume loads due to axial tension, longitudinal bending and external pressure acting singly or in pairs. INTRODUCTION Existing limit state formulations for ultimate strength of rigid flowlines have been reviewed. Moan etal/ and Estefen et al/ treated riser bodies based on bending stress approach. Later on Estefen et al/ considered pipelines based on bending strain approach. The studies proposed alternative formulations for combined loads represented by external press
