Abstract
The H\go-ken Nanbu Harthquake, 1995 caused devastating damages to structures in and round Kobe. Among them, traffic viaduct structures have suffered considerable bending and/or shear force failures from it. At the same time, we have evidenced some unprecedented structural damages (see Fig. 1) which should better be interpreted by the tensile/compressive stress failures due to the impulsive seismic loading.
