Abstract
The performance of the mode superposition techniques used in literature for dynamical soil- structure interacting problems is evaluated by comparison with closed form solutions available for a simplified continuous model. It is shown how some methods converge to the exact solution if a sufficient number of modes are included in the analysis, while others provide erroneous results regardless of the number of modes considered. 1 Introduction It is well known that the response of structures under seismic excitations may be greatly affected by the dynamical interaction between soil and structure.
