Abstract
This paper describes the development of the system SIRO, an optimal regulation tool for metro lines. SIRO combines simulation, optimisation and hierarchical control techniques. The objectives of the system are (1) to improve the quality of the service, (2) save energy and (3) to provide a powerful monitoring and operation environment. The paper summarizes the requirements, design and implementation phases of the project, emphasizing relevant aspects such as the optimisation techniques and the real-time aspects of the design. 1 Introduction The natural instability of a metro line is a well-known problem. It is also known that manual regulation actions produced by operators are hardly accurate, fast and global
