Abstract
The paper reviews and discusses the properties of High Performance Synthetic Fibre Ropes (HPSFR), including Kevlar and Dyneema fibres. These materials are attractive for applications requiring high stiffness, high tenacity and low density. They are frequently used for mooring of ships, offshore installations, defence and oceanography. Advantages and limitations of these ropes, relative to the traditional natural fibres and steel wire ropes, will also be discussed in the light of the requirements for marine applications. Also replacement of intermediate performance ropes with HPSFRs will be analysed critically. 1 Introduction The modern super tankers and offshore installations have created the need for better
