Abstract
This paper presents a ship traffic modelling approach, which aims to determine mathematical models from existing historical records of ship movements and flows between ports. It is shown that, under quite general assumptions, it is possible to obtain a discrete-time state space model expressed in terms of column-stochastic matrices. After a preliminary introduction dedicated to the essential properties and main features of the traffic model , a discussion of the possible use of such a model for simulation purposes is developed. It is demonstrated, for this purpose, that the proposed model can efficiently cope with high-dimensional problems and can be therefore used for simulating and predicting the traffic evolution inside a relatively large sea basin.
