Abstract
Possibilities for improving the mathematical model of a ship manoeuvring simulator, based on results of captive motion tests with ship models, are discussed. Most topics concern simulation of manoeuvres in rather extreme conditions, such as very shallow water, harbour manoeuvres, and effects due to lateral restrictions of the navigational area. For validation of mathematical models, a technique based on captive model tests is proposed as well. 1 Introduction Real-time ship manoeuvring simulation has proved to be a very useful tool for several purposes, e.g. design of new navigation areas, evaluation of the access of new shipping traffics to existing ports, training of pilots
