Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the development of a computer aided ship design basing on the experience of Szczecin Shipyard (Stocznia Szczecinska S.A.). Until the end of the eighties, computer implementations at Szczecin Shipyard's design office were mainly limited to theoretical calculations, strength analysis and 2-D graphics that supported a manual drafting. About five years ago we introduced a new way of thinking about ship design. Our goal was to build a virtual ship before a real one - THE PRODUCT INFORMATION MODEL. To carry this idea into effect we had to create an integrated computer system that would take care of all the aspects of ship design and manufacturing. The major part of the system was a Swedish software named Steerbear (now converted to Tribon). At present Tribon
