ABSTRACT The transient scattering of elastic waves by a surface-breaking crack in a half-space is investigated by using a combined boundary integral and finite element technique. The boundary integral representation is used in the far-field outside a contour enclosing completely the crack. This is then coupled with the finite element solutions in the near-field. The response in frequency domain is calculated, then it is transformed into the time domain by using FFT. Displacements on the free surface and stress intensity factors are presented for incident body and Rayleigh waves. 1 INTRODUCTION The transient scattering of el
