Abstract
This paper describes the application of symmetric Galerkin boundary element method (SGBEM) for the analysis of 2D linear elastic crack problems. Unlike collocation boundary element method, SGBEM requires only C^'" - continuity for the kinematic unknown on the crack surface, thereby allowing the use of standard C° interpolations. The direct SGBEM for crack problems is derived using Betti's reciprocal theorem resulting in a completely symmetric matrix. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated on a finite rectangular plate containing a central crack. 1 Introduction In collocation
