Abstract
A genetic algorithm (GA) is described, which produces solutions to the cost optimization problem of reinforcement element layout design for reinforced earth slopes. These solutions can incorporate the use of different types of reinforcement within a single reinforced earth slope. The GA models natural, biological evolution as a means of producing a 'good' solution to a problem. The GA described here is implemented with the aim of optimizing (reducing) the cost of materials for the preliminary layout of reinforced earth embankments. To investigate the effectiveness of the GA strategy it is applied to an example problem using real material specifications. The design method chosen for the implementation of this work is the United Kingdom's Departmen
