Abstract
The motion of a statistically significant number of cylinders in a two- dimensional Couette flow is studied using a completed double-layer indirect boundary integral formulation. The condition number of the linear system of equations, comprising the discretized boundary integral equations and the supplementary equilibrium equations, is reduced considerably with the use of a preconditioner based on the structure of the matrix. The speed of the solution of the linear system is increased using a first-shift multi- pole formulation, in conjunction with an iterative linear equation solver. It is shown that the multipole method is extremely well suited to paralleliza-
