Abstract

A procedure is presented, which is based on boundary integral equations and gives information about the accuracy of numerical solutions in the context of structural analysis. The proposed technique appears effective for the control of mesh refinement. Some examples concerned with finite element elastic analysis are given, but the approach is also applicable to other numerical methods (such as boundary elements or finite differences) and to nonlinear material models (such as models that account for plastic strains and/or damage effects). 1 Introduction Several error indicators have been developed, with particular attention paid to finite element models. Examples are given by Babuska & Rheinboldt*, Kelly et all, Zienkiewicz & Zhu^, Oden & Patra\ Patra et al?, who make
