Abstract
In the present work, a new efficient and reliable error indicator for Hermite elements that directly measures the error in the stresses is presented. This error indicator exploits the high accuracy in the values of the boundary stresses provided by this type of element. The basic idea behind the computation of the error indicator is to compare, on an element by element basis, the solution obtained from an analysis using Hermite elements with a "reduced" solution obtained by approximating the field variables using some of the degrees of freedom of the Hermite element together with conventional shape functions. In this sense, it is assumed that the bigger the difference between these two solutions, the bigger the error in the values of the stresse
