Abstract
The performance of a waterfog fire suppression system in a shipboard machinery room is being evaluated via numerical simulation using Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations for the waterfog and gas phase, respectively. The fire in one fuel pan is located on the floor immediately under the deck plate, and the influence of deck level obstructions, such as perforated plates, pipes and cables, upon the fire extinguishment capability of the waterfog is investigated by modelling these obstructions as porous medium. The parametric study conducted produces consistent results for the cases tested in what concerns pan temperature and fire suppression. Increasing blockage yields increasing values for these parameters, and, on a tentative basis, it is discussed the appropriate placement of nozzl
