Abstract

This paper describes the finite-element approach to a radially-symmetric moving boundary problem in continuous casting and the corresponding inverse problem, where conditions on solidification time and external fluxes are to be met optimally. Our approach relies on automatic differentiation during the whole integration procedure of the ordinary differential equations obtained by finite-element discretization, either to first or second order, the former lead to steepest-descent algorithms, the latter also include the possibility of Newton-Raphson iterations when sufficiently close to the optimum. 1 Introduction Although continuous casting is a widely-applied technique of great eco- nomic impact to metallurgy, the obtention of precise experimental data
