Abstract
The graphical display format provides a very powerful mechanism to effectively communicate vast amounts of information on roadway projects and related databases. An application tool in an Internet Server environment, combined with a Geographic Information System (GIS), can be used to disseminate such spatial information to dispersed users effectively, efficiently, and in a timely manner. Such a system is a powerful tool to communicate and exchange information amongst various entities, which include the general public, elected officials, managers, and staff of public and private sector organizations. This paper discusses the functionality, development, and capabilities of the system. Keywords: Geographic Information Systems, GIS, Internet, web, transportation, map, display, communication. 1 Introduction The general public, elected officials, managers and staff of the public and the private sector organizations are interested in the transportation system, its relationship to landuse, its functionality and other databases because of its tremendous impact on public safety, quality of life, business and the economy of the region. The spatial nature of the road network makes the use of maps a natural tool to display information. The graphical display format provides a powerful mechanism to effectively communicate vast amounts of information on roadway projects. It also helps serve as an index to additional information in databases related to the graphical display. Such information is frequently exchanged and communicated among various agencies and organizations. Over the last decade Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs have gained wide acceptance for managing such activities
