Abstract
Reaming with ultra-hard abrasives is a new form of internal bore finishing technique which offers good geometrical tolerance. The process is an alternative to honing and cylindrical grinding whose mechanics are more complex and economically unjustifiable. However, only very little effort has been directed towards computer-aided reaming, in comparison with other forms of automated hole-finishing techniques such as numerically controlled grinding or honing machines. Hence the process optimisation is still underdeveloped. This paper reviews and discusses the application of a generic knowledge-based system to facilitate decision and improve bore geometry.
