Abstract
The idea system for car diagnosis developed by Centro Ricerche Fiat is one of the most successful practical applications of automated diagnosis. However, idea is based on functional dependency models that have to be built ad-hoc for each specic device to be diagnosed. Thus, the models are not easily reusable and this increases the cost of building new applications. In this paper we show how models of the sort used by idea can be derived automatically from a library of generic component models, given a description of the structure of the device to be diagnosed.
