Abstract

BEST (Blackboard-based Expert Systems Toolkit) provides abstract modelling capability, so the experts' conceptualisation of the design and manufacturing process can be captured. Modelling the metastructure of the design process from the expert's point of view is essential for nonexpert designers and manufacturers to effectively use the environment. As the design progresses, the abstract representation of the design space or hierarchy expands to more and more concrete objects to be manipulated by the succeeding design process.
