Abstract

Research into software quality is divided into two subareas: quality of the software process and quality of software products. The quality of the software process and process improve- ment have often been approached recently from the viewpoint of software development, and the software evolution and maintenance aspect has often been neglected. Software evolution focuses on software as a living system that grows and evolves through modification. The purpose of this paper is to investigate aspects affecting the quality of the software modifica- tion process and the quality of software products from the viewpoint of modification activi- ties. This paper combines the results of two analyses of criteria relevant to the quality of change activities in the maintenance and development phases of the software life cycle. Two case studies from the domain of real-time embedded
