Abstract
Software risk management has been receiving increasing attention lately. A key activity of software risk management is the quantification of the risk of using a software product. This paper presents a method to determine the risk index for quantifying the probability and the impact of failure. The method makes use of the recent development in software complexity metrics, principal component analysis and reliability growth modeling. Four intuitive ways to estimate the probability of failures are also investigated using a telecommunication software. The failure impact of a software module is determined using the principal component analysis and regression analysis of the failure data from other similar software modules. Results from applying the risk index to a to-be-released software are also presented. 1 Introduction Software systems are b
