Abstract
The paper first describes the concept and implementation of our general purpose parallel finite element software package PARFEM for the solution of solid mechanics problems. A first ver- sion of the code capable of solving linear elastostatics problems has been implemented on a parallel transputer system ParSytec GC 128 (with 128 transputer network) and successfully tested for engineering problems. The domain decomposition of the model is generally regarded as being one of the biggest problems in parallel FEA, besides the solution phase of the large size equation systems in transputer network. The paper therefore presents a concept for the domain decomposition, where the mesh grading is estimated by a priori knowledge about the behaviour of the solution.
