Abstract
Damage to architectural glazing by the windborne debris during severe windstorms is well documented. In this study, the stress response of and fracture initiation in glass panels impacted by a large soft missile such as collapsed trees and ceiling wood is investigated using the finite element method. For the crack initiation, the energy release rate criterion is developed to determine the crack initiation time and location. The effect of various geometric, material and loading parameters on the maximum principal stress and failure modes is examined.
