Abstract
Unlike a single two-stream heat exchanger, design and operation of heat exchanger networks are usually an inverse problem. Methods for rating, sizing, simulation, regulation and synthesis of two-stream and multistream heat exchanger networks based on a general matrix solution are developed. The corresponding optimization problems are formulated which yield better results than those in the literature. Keywords: heat exchanger network, multistream heat exchanger, dynamic simulation, heat exchanger network synthesis, optimization. 1 Introduction In many industrial processes heat exchanger networks (HEN) are used to transfer heat among more than two fluids, in which the cold fluids are heated by the hot fluids which need to be cooled and vice versa. In this way a large amount of heat energy can be recovered from the working fluids and therefore
