Abstract

HTADAPT: An h-adaptive finite element model for heat transfer D. W. Pepper \ T. Wilcox', and L. Gewalf ^Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nevada, Las Vegas ^Department of Computer Science, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Abstract A web-based, adaptive finite element model with mesh generator has been developed that solves for 2-D heat transfer within any user-specified domain. The numerical model is based on a hybrid finite element approach utilizing h- adaptation to refine and unrefine unstructured grids. Using local mesh refinement, accurate simulations are calculated even though one begins with a coarse grid. The mesh generator and solver, written in Java, can be accessed by connection to web site http ://www. un 1 v. edu/Research Centers/NCAC M. 1 Introduction For the engineer interested in thermal analysis, the ability to accurately simulate heat transfer processes in all types of geometry is important.
