Abstract
This study describes a numerical approach and the solution procedure for heat transfer calculations of biofuels in a fixed bed combustor. The present model is evaluated and its performance is investigated. The main point of the model description is the thermal radiation and the properties in order to predict it. In this steady state, 2D, CFD-model, the Pi-approximation is used to solve the radiation transfer equation (RTE) and the exponential wide band model (EWBM) is used to calculate the absorption coefficient of the gases. The fixed bed is modelled as a porous medium, using a modified form of Darcy's law. The radiation in the bed is taken into consideration by a scaling factor. The results show that the most important parameter, of the ones investigated, is the soot volume fraction and that
