Abstract
Various methods of optimizing composition and microstructure of surface layers of machinery components using suitable surface treatment are known to improve surface mechanical properties of steel materials and components including the resistance against growth of fatigue cracks. However, specific damage mechanisms being important and decisive for different conditions of a material and loading including environment should be considered. On the basis of two different practical examples of environmentally assisted fatigue damage, namely (i) crack growth in structural carbon steels of different microstructure in ambient environment with a standard humidity and in oil and (ii) results of an influence of water environment on corrosion fa
