Abstract
We use estimates for the energy fluxes associated with direct and inverse cascades in observed spectra to infer functional constraints on parameterizations for wind input, Sin, and dissipation, Sds, in operational wave models. We show that current parameterizations for j),n and %,, are somewhat different from the constraints we derive, particularly for very old or very young waves. 1 Introduction The evolution of spectral wave energy may be approximately described by the spectral balance equation (1) where E(/,0) is the spectral wave energy as a function of fre- quency /, direction 0. position, z, and time, Z.
