Abstract

In order to make clear the effect of a work hardened layer on the notched fatigue strength of cast iron, it is necessary to know first the effect of a notch on the specimen without a work hardened layer. So, in this paper, fatigue tests are made on the notched cast iron specimens without work hardened layer and the obtained results are discussed based on the linear notch mechanics. 1 Introduction In most cases, fatigue or fracture of machines and structures is brought by the stress concentration due to the existence of a notch or a defect. On the other hand, it is well known that the elastic maximum stress is not
