Abstract
When the light scattered from a machined surface is collected by a CCD camera, the resulting image is three-dimensional. This paper describes how this 'three-dimensional' image can be analysed by various measures and related to the machined surface finish and texture. 1.0 Introduction Research studies have shown that the majority of engineering component failures start at a manufactured surface due to either an isolated manufacturing discontinuity, or a gradual deterioration of the tool condition resulting in a decrease in surface quality. Not only is the surface finish responsible for component failures but also for the performance of an artefact during its lifetime^ The traditional method of inspecting manufactured surfa
