Abstract
Co-ordinate measuring machines are often calibrated or recalibrated using a laser interferometer system. During a calibration each axis is moved in a sequence of well defined target positions. These positions are then checked with the laser interferometer and the error is written to a file. The result of this calibration can then be analysed to National or International Standards. There are fundamental differences between manual and CNC co-ordinate measuring machines. On manual machines it is necessary to move the axis under test exactly to the target position by hand and then trigger the laser to record the difference between the laser reading and the actual position. This method is very time consuming, because at every target the operator has to move the axis to the right position. On a typical axis, with s
