Abstract

In the Stevin laboratory a new experimental program has been started to inves- tigate size effect on strength and fracture energy of concrete under uniaxial ten- sion. The starting-points of the experiments are outlined and both a description of the test set-up and some preliminary results are given. Furthermore, the re- sults of additional simulations with the lattice model are presented, which are used to better understand the experimental outcome. The simulations focus on size effect on strength within a lattice model, and the prediction of experimen- tally observed specimen behaviour. Introduction The values for the concrete nominal strength and the fracture energy that are found in experiments are size dependent. During the past decades this size effect phenomenon has become subject of increasing interest, inducing great experi- mental and theoretical efforts to investigate and explain it's nat
