Abstract
Rate-dependent softening model utilising the theory of viscoplasticity in the context of the rotating smeared crack approach is considered for simulation of localised failure of quasi-brittle materials under dynamic loading conditions. It is assumed that the localisation process is initiated upon the violation of a yield criterion and is further governed by the strain softening process. The occurrence of strain softening in the continuum leads to localisation of deformation, which causes a local failure through the occurrence of cracks in the localised zones. Finite element removal technique is considered for modelling of the final separation of a continuum when the load-carrying capability of the element has completely vanished. R
