Abstract
This study concerns a method by which stress distribution and resulting stress intensity factors (K-values) can be determined from the crack opening/sliding displacements along a crack separately for mode I and I, in terms of linear fracture mechanics. This method was checked analytically, and then applied to estimation of fracture angles and crack propagation rates for bent fatigue crack growth, in which a localised damage at the mixed- mode crack tip was related to a yield strip model based on BCS crack theory. As a result, this method was successful for estimating fracture behavior under mixed— mode conditions. 1 Introduction For evaluation of fatigue crack propagation properties, it is important to determine a mechanical parameter controlling
