Abstract
Modification of mechanical states near a crack tip by mobile defects such as interstitial impurities and the related defect redistribution in a crack field are examined with particular attention to the crack-tip shielding/ anti-shielding effects on crack extension. The presence of interstitial impurities near a crack tip modifies stress states of the crack field and the local stress intensity k is increased when impurities are located ahead of a crack tip. The redistribution of impurities is induced not only by an applied K field but also by the stress modification due to ambient impurities through the presence of a crack. The increase of tetragonal strain du
