Abstract
A three-dimensional Monte Carlo scheme for an instantaneous release, combining the features of relative diffusion theory, similarity theory and a model for the wind field is examined by application to Nisyros island (Greece). Experimental verification of the transportation conditions and the dispersion mechanism was attempted through observations of free balloons, the trajectories of which were followed by a system of two theodolites. 1 Introduction The Monte Carlo simulation approach has already been shown to be a very powerful method for modelling pollutant dispersion over a complex terrain because the complications there, namely inhomogeneity of the mean flow and turbulence, can in principle be easily accommo
