Abstract
Investigation of the deep water formation in the N. Aegean Sea basin Y.N. Krestenitis, LA. Valioulis Department of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, GR 54006 Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece Abstract The Aegean Sea is an eastern Mediterranean sub-basin with highly complex bathymetry, high seasonal variations in temperature, considerable fresh water fluxes, and large gradients in salinity or temperature across neighbouring water masses (Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean). To simulate the hydrography of the Aegean Sea, a primitive equation, time-dependent, free surface, split mode time-step model (hereafter the Aegean model) has been developed that solves the continuity and momentum equations, the conservation equations for heat and salinity, and makes use of the turbulence closure scheme of Mellor and Yamada [10]. In the work reported herein, the Aegean model is coupled with an advection-diffusion model to study th
