Abstract
The paper reviews the current situation facing the implementation of sustainable tourism in Scotland’s recently constituted National Parks. It examines the background and unique characteristics of the national park model in Scotland and discusses alternative approaches to achieving sustainability through tourism. The paper argues that the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism provides a useful framework, in particular for The Cairngorms. The research is based on a combination of published literature, official reports and consultation with key National Park partners and interest groups.
