Abstract

The paper consists of four main parts. The first part gives an analysis of the sustainable tourism discourse. Two main axes of understanding are presented; intensity problems versus volume problems on one axis, and stationary activities versus mobile activities on the other. The prevailing understanding of the concept of sustainable tourism mostly as a matter of stationary activities and intensity problems raises several issues for further analysis and discussion. One is that there is no tourism without travel and transport - or mobility and mobile activities as are the terms applied. This of course also requires a focus on the mobile activities in tourism, not least as transport is a major cause of the most serious environmental problems, both as intensity and volume problems.
