Abstract
In recent years new European Union (EU) new air quality directives have been introduced in the legislation. These directives define the legislative basis for assessment and management of air quality in Member States. The Framework Directive gives general requirements and the Daughter Directives specify the requirements for the various pollutants in more detail. The Directive requires Member States to divide their territory into zones - whereby an agglomeration is a special type of zone - based on the results of the initial identification of the levels of pollution and to perform ongoing assessment requirements related to the levels of pollution within the zones.
