Abstract

Computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) plays an important role in reverse design activities. Over the past few decades, several CAAD tools have been extensively studied and implemented, although the digitisation of large objects, such as buildings, is not often possible with the available systems. In this paper several drawbacks of the existing systems for reverse design activities are described and a new approach is proposed to solve these limitations. This new biologically-based system (BioCAD) replicates the human vision process into a computer under a biomimetic principle. BioCAD, specifically designed for the rapid generation of computer models from existing large objects, is based on an hybrid method that encompasses the best of both photogrammetry and computer vision together with biologically-based al
