Abstract
With the increasing emphasis on sustainable development as central elements of government programmes, this study examines the challenge of achieving sustainable development within peripheral locations. Lack of research, specifically into island locations, leads to a focus on Islay, with a population of 3,457. Islay is distinct in its attempt to co-ordinate various aspects of the island along sustainable lines (renewable energy; green transport; solar heating; Scotland’s first sustainable development company; plans for a wind farm and an Islay energy centre).
