Abstract
The state of Michigan is generally acknowledged as a leader in efforts within the United States to promote the reuse of brownfield properties. The state has both implemented a number of substantive legislative changes and appropriated significant revenue to this effort. Unfortunately, the state collects no systematic information as to what happens to the properties that have been identified as brownfields. This paper describes an effort to create a database describing a sample of contaminated properties, and illustrates how these data provide important insights into both overall levels of economic activity on targeted sites and changes in the surrounding neighborhood. The paper concludes with a discussion of how these data may simultaneously impact the academic and policy worlds. Keywords: brownfield
