Abstract

The most common groundwater contaminant originating from agricultural practi- ces is nitrate. High nitrate concentrations in pumped water, which often exceed the drinking water standards, are mainly due to intensive nitrogen fertilization. On the other hand, the physical, chemical and biochemical phenomena of nitrate leaching from agricultural land into the soil and subsurface water are complex and very much dependent upon local conditions. As a result, reliable simulation models of such phenomena can be developed only when they are supported by detailed in situ investigations. The case presented in this paper is a typical problem of nitrate contamination in shallow aquifers; still it is one of very few studied in Greece. As shown below, the development
