Abstract
The basic principle of the SMAR (Soil Moisture Accounting and Routing) model and the related numerical algorithms are presented briefly. The SMAR software package and its features are introduced. Finally, the calibrated model results for seven catchments of different sizes, from various climatic regions, are summarized. 1 INTRODUCTION Occurrences of floods and droughts all over the world are natural phenom- ena. With an increase in world population and economic development, the damages of floods and droughts represent an increasing hazard in many coun- tries. Consequently, it is of the utmost importance to utilize the most efficient methods for river flow forecasting in order to assess and reduce such natural water hazards to the minimal or managable level. As various forms of hydr
