Abstract
A groundwater management model which combines the use of a distributed parameter groundwater flow simulation model with a non-linear optimization method, is presented in this paper. The scope of the management model is to minimise the pumping cost in the Kokkinohoria aquifer in Cyprus. There are over four hundred active wells in the area, and they all participate in the optimization model as decision variables. The response matrix technique was used as a link between the specially designed flow simulation model, using an implicit partial differences scheme, and the optimization model, which consists of a non-linear objective function subjected to linear constraints.
