Trento, Italy Abstract The procedures of the Chemical Industry have been ruled by the succession of paradigms which have governed our understanding of chemical reactions. Thus, during the preceding six centuries, we can see the evolution from the empirical rules of the Middle Ages to the more sophisticated and mature approaches of Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics. At the present time we can see the emergence of a new paradigm based on Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and in particular on Quantum Electro Dynamics (QED). In the present paper we discuss how this new paradigm might allow new approaches to the two main problem areas of the present day Chemical Industry: the large demand of low-grade energy and the elimination of the
