Perine Chernonics International Znc., USA Abstract The success of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in terms of improving project environmental soundness, and ultimately supporting sustainable development, is often questionable because the application of the process itself, evaluation of findings and post-assesstnent follow-up actions are inconsistent and many times insufficient. This paper explores ways to better structure and manage baseline data collection and long term environmental monitoring to: (a) reduce the financial and other resource burden of individual project proponents; (b) reduce the resources required by regulatory authorities to provide adequate oversight of environmental monitoring activities; and (c) improve the quality of data available.
