Abstract
The Mobility Agency carried out a survey concerning the potential demand of transport in the 31 small towns surrounding Milan, aimed at re-designing the public transport network by introducing both traditional and alternative services, in a way that may attract a large share of commuters who use private cars. The survey was carried out in two phases. The first one aimed at analyzing the behaviors characterizing the use of the transport system with a thoroughly examination of modal and route choice; at recognizing the sub-samples of current regular and occasional users and of potential users of the public transport (these will be the object of following \“Stated Preferences” tests); and at building the scenarios to check the potentialities of the use of public transport means and the introduction of alternative public transport modes. In the second one, a special ‘‘Stated Preferences” survey was carried out to detect all the aspects of the potential demand, both quantitative and qualitative. It evaluated the sensibility of user’s choices with reference to the characteristics of the public transport service to be offered. Finally, the Urban Area Services obtained from the survey could be proposed, with the relevant definition of a number of technical and management characteristics. 1. Methodology The analysis of current and potential demand of public transport in the 31 small towns surrounding Milan -which ns aimed at re-designing the offer of public transport - is articulated in two main phases.
